This is one of the foremost kshetras dedicated to Lord Narasimha. One of the 108 Divya Desams in Vaishnavite tradition, this shrine is situated in Kancheepuram, near Asthabuyaharam temple. Narasimha took the divine incarnation in King Hiranyakasipu’s palace. In order to punish the king he took the from of Narasimha, the lion-headed God. Unable to put up with the atrocities of the king, Narasimha left his abode in Hastisylam cave to enter into a pillar in the King’s palace. To satisfy the child devotee Prahalada, who is also Hiranyakasipu’s son, Narasimha appeared from the pillar. He donned another avatar (also called Narasimha) wherein he chased away the demons who hid in several places. Narasimha arrived at this spot covered with thick vegetation (in those days) and beautiful surroundings and wished to stay back. ‘Vell’ means desire in Tamil. Since the Lord wished to remain in this place, it is called ‘Tiruvellukai’. The deity is called Yoga Narasimha. Swami Desikan, the illustrious Sanskrit servant, has extolled the virtues of Narasimha in nectar filled verses - 'Kamasika Ashtakam'. Many Azhwars have sung in praise of the Lord. The utsava murti attracts devotees because of its indescribable beauty. There is a separate shrine for the divine consort, Amirthavalli Thayar. Deities - Narasimhan, Mukunda Nayakan.|
