It is said to be the only temple in the world which houses the Trinity (Siva, Vishnu, Brahma) of the Hindu pantheon - Uthamar Koil, Tirukarambanur Bikshandar Koil. Situated near Trichy, the temple has a hoary past. Brahma Puranam talks about the existence of this temple. In order to please a devotee, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva are said to have given darshan to him. Brahma used to propitiate Vishnu everyday. In order to test his devotion, Vishnu appeared in the form of 'Kadamba tree' in this place. Fully aware of Vishnu’s disguise, Brahma paid obeisance and watered the tree. Pleased with Brahma’s devotion Vishnu asked him to stay back in this place and offer prayers to him. Thus, Brahma and his consort, the Goddess of Learning, Saraswati, are a part of the divine congregation.Another lore says Shiva became envious of the number of heads of Brahma. In a fit of rage he plucked one of Brahma’s head and threw it away. A curse befell him - ‘Brahmahathi Dosham’. The 'kabalam' (skull) stuck to Shiva’s hand. He undertook a holy trip with the kabalam and returned to this place. Vishnu, unable to see the condition of Shiva, asked Lakshmi, Vishnu’s consort, to save him from the curse. When Lakshmi gave alms (biksha) the kabalam was filled. Thus Shiva got rid of the curse and he took the name of Bikshandar. In view of this, the temple got its name ‘Bikshandar Koil’. Vishnu took the form of Kadamba tree in this place and thus it came to be called Kadambanur. All the Azhwars have extolled the virtues of Vishnu and called him Uthamar – hence the name Uthamar Koil. Andal has eulogised Vishnu in Tiruppavai in the third pasuram ‘Oongi Ulagalantha Uthaman……..’ Though the gopuram is small, it is a repository of art. There is a separate enclosure for Dakshinamurthi the ‘God of Knowledge’! People flock to the temple on Thursdays to propitiate Brahma and Dakshinamurthi for knowledge and learning. The deities are Purushottaman(Vishnu) and Poornavalli Thayar|
