THIRUVALLUR (THIRU- EV-VULUR)

Sree Veeraraghava Temple Religion/Temples - SaranathanTiruvallur is a famous Vaishnava sthala in the district of Tiruvallur. The main deity's name is Evvulkidandhan and the Thayar's name is Kanakavalli. This sthala's old name is Thiru Evvulur. Sthalapurana A sage by name Salihothrar had stayed on the banks of the sacred pond near this temple. Once, in the month of January (Tamil month 'Thai'),on a new moon day(Amavasya) the sage, after finishing his pooja, offered a portion of flour as 'neivedhyam' to God and waited to offer the remaining portion to someone. An old Brahmin came and asked for it. The sage happily parted with it. But the Brahmin's hunger was not appeased and he asked for the other portion.
The sage immediately gave the flour and fasted the whole day. In the same way, he performed pooja the next year also and waited with expectation to give away the portion of the flour. The same Brahmin came to his ashram and asked for the flour. After eating, the old Brahmin felt tired and asked the sage 'Evvul?' (which room?). The sage showed his sleeping place and requested him to rest there. The next minute, God, who had come in the form of the Brahmin, blessed the sage in the 'sayana kolam' (sleeping posture). The sage was given the opportunity to ask for a boon and so he wished that God should relieve devotees who visit the place of their sufferings and problems. It is said God manifested Himself as promised in this sthala. Religion/Temples - SaranathanIt is believed that bathing in this temple's sacred pond relieves one of their diseases. The water is said to be more sacred than the Ganga. The speciality here is that sandal oil alone is used for abhishekam for the main deity. The Prumalin the sleeping posture is about 15 feet in length and 5 feet in height. The sanctum sanctorum of Lakshmi Narasimhar and Chakkarathazhwar are very popular here at this temple. This temple is an ancient one and was built during the times of the Pallavas.
Utsavasam Brahmotsavam is celebrated for 10 days twice a year, in the months of January and April. Pavithra Utsavam is also celebrated for 7 days. The devotees throng this temple on Amavasai days, bathe in the pond and tonsure their heads. If this is done consecutively, it is believed that one is relieved of their physical sufferings, especially pain related to stomach, hands and legs or fever. The Lord is also known as Vaidhya Veeraraghavar.
Offerings One can offer vastram known as 'palli thuppatti' to the Perumal here. This vastram is not available outside and can be purchased from the office in the temple. This offering of vastram is very special at this temple. The other offerings are figures in silver or gold, performing Thirumanjanam to Prumal, offering prasadam to the devotees and silk saree to the Thayar here. If one dissolves milk or jaggery in the pond, boils and skin eruptions disappear and in the same way, one can offer salt and pepper in the mantap of this temple.
