Descending in that spot, Brahma noticed an idol set in an Amla tree. Brahma recognized the idol as Lord Vishnu and the place asVishnuloka. With the help of theDevas, Brahma installed the idol and called it Sahyamalak Kshetra. At Brahma’s request Vishnu promised that the waters of the area would wash away all sins. (Thus, the spring and river near the temple is called Papanasini—“washes away all sins”). Thirunelli is 32-km away from Mananthavadi.

The temple is surrounded by dense forests inhabited by wildlife, notably elephants. The east faced sitting main deity Vishmnu is considered as the guardian of the region. There are sub-deities of Ganapathy, Hanuman and Nagam. The cave in the west side of the temple is the abode of Gundiga Shiva, while Bhadra Kali and Vettekaran have abodes in south side. For temple ceremonies water was brought from Papanashini River in the older days as there was no water source in the temple premises. Now, the modern era, water for temple use is drawn from a pond in the Brahmagiri girl hills by employing a unique method of bamboo channels. This is an ancient tribal technology. The traditional temple architecture employed here is superb. 30 granite columns shield the temple. Ground is carpeted with huge granite square pieces.
Click To EnlargeThe temple uses its own tusker to take out the idol for rituals. The priest who performs the Poojas are prohibited from leaving the temple premises during his tenure.
The Papanashini River which has crystal clear water runs down hill at the foot of the temple.
