Srimushnam - SaranathanOf the 108 'Divya Desams' in Vaishnavite tradition, eight are supposed to be 'Swayamvakta kshetrams' (the idols appeared on their own). 'Srimushnam' is one among them. Situated near Chidambaram and Vridhachalam, Vridhachalam,it has a hoary past. Srimushnam's presiding deity is 'Lord Bhuvaraha'. Because of this, it is also called 'Varaha Kshetram'. Lord Mahavishnu, unable to put up with the atrocities committed by Hiranyakshan, took the form of a 'wild boar' in order to rescue the world. In Krutayuga, the demon, Hiranyakshan, hid the world in the 'Patala Loka' (underworld) and tortured the Devas. The Almighty decided to punish him and so devoured him and rescued the world. The icon is made of Saligrama and is also called 'Yagna Varahan'. The utsavamurthy does not resemble a wild boar in acceptance to the desire of His celestial consort. This is the only place where all the deities are Varaha Murtis. His consort 'Ambujavalli Thayar' looks ethereal, ever ready to bless her devotees.
Srimushnam - SaranathanThe rivers, lakes and tanks in India have a great significance. The temple tank, called 'Pushkarani', is known for its medicinal values which is a panacea. Similarly, the temple tank in Srimushnam is called 'Nithya Pushkarani', and is considered more sacred than the mightyGanga. The 'Ashwatha tree', which stands like a colossus near the sacred tank, has a beneficial effect of blessing sterile women with progeny. Meditation and chanting of' Gayathri Manthra'under the tree after bathing in the holy tank vouchsafes a place in the heavens. Similarly, having a divine communion with Lord Bhuvarahan after a sacred dip in the 'Nithya Pushkarani' guarantees kingship in the next birth. Sundays and Thursdays are considered auspicious to bathe in the tank. Mortals caught in the quagmire of the mundane world will be redeemed of their karma once they take a holy dip here.
