Of the 108 'Divya Desams' in Vaishnavite tradition, eight are supposed to be 'Swayamvakta kshetrams' (the idols appeared on their own). 'Srimushnam' is one among them. Situated near Chidambaram and Vridhachalam, Vridhachalam,it has a hoary past. Srimushnam's presiding deity is 'Lord Bhuvaraha'. Because of this, it is also called 'Varaha Kshetram'. Lord Mahavishnu, unable to put up with the atrocities committed by Hiranyakshan, took the form of a 'wild boar' in order to rescue the world. In Krutayuga, the demon, Hiranyakshan, hid the world in the 'Patala Loka' (underworld) and tortured the Devas. The Almighty decided to punish him and so devoured him and rescued the world. The icon is made of Saligrama and is also called 'Yagna Varahan'. The utsavamurthy does not resemble a wild boar in acceptance to the desire of His celestial consort. This is the only place where all the deities are Varaha Murtis. His consort 'Ambujavalli Thayar' looks ethereal, ever ready to bless her devotees.|
