Story:

SaneLord Saneeswaran - Saranathaneswaran is the offspring of Lord Suryan. There is an engaging story about his birth and growth. Samjanadevi, who was married to Lord Suryan, feared to live with him because of his burning heat. After they had three children, Vaiswathamanu, Yaman and Yamunai, she decided to go back to her parental house. She made a woman out of her own shadow and named it Chayadevi and left her to live with Lord Suryan. Chayadevi lived with Suryan without revealing that she was only a shadow of Samjanadevi. She als bore him three children: Savarni, Saneeswaran and Pathirai.

As he grew up, Saneeswaran went to Kasi and made a Lingam bearing his name and worshipped Lord Siva. Due to his penance, he wasLord Saneeswaran - Saranathan elevated to be a 'graha'. He also begot a son named Kuligan. Saneeswaran is supposed to be a limp. This was caused by his half-brother Yama hitting him with a stick (dhanda). There is a saying in Tamil that translates as 'there is none who gives a good life like Saneeswaran or ruins a life like Saneeswaran' (Saniyaippol koduppavanum illai, keduppavanum illai). Depending on his position in the horoscope of a person, it is believed that he will bring good luck or ill-luck. Everyone lives in terror of 'ezharainattu sani' which means bad luck for seven-and-a-half years. This is based on the calculation of the Navagrahas in one's horoscope and the position that Saneeswaran holds. The sastras also mention 'pariharas' that can be done to lessen the evils of this period or at least gain the confidence to face the problems. Tirunallar Lord Saneeswaran has worshipped in many places. But paramountLord Saneeswaran - Saranathan among them is Tirunallar, situated near Karaikal of the Union Territory of Puducherry. The main deity of Nallartreswarar is in the form of a Lingam. The notable feature in the temple is that the bali peetam is slightly away from its usual position. Nobody has escaped from the clutches of Lord Sanee, and there are some examples for it. King Nala lost his kingdom, wife and all that he had due to the Sanee dosham. Even when he went into the Dharbaaranyeswarar temple (in Tirunallar) to get rid of the dosham, Saneeswaran was perched on his shoulder. Lord Siva then ordered Sanee to go away and not bother his devotee who had come to Him for relief. Obeying Lord Siva's order, Saneeswaran got down from Nala's shoulder and stood there. Even today, one can find Saneeswaran standing in a corner of the temple, on way to the sanctum sanctorum of Lord Siva.Lord Saneeswaran - Saranathan
Saneeswaran rules over Makaram and Kumbha rasis. It is ideal for people born in these rasis to wear a blue-coloured gem and black clothes, and donate til seeds (el). They should also perform archanas and light a lamp for Lord Saneeswaran every Saturday.
