The greatness of Kaisika Ekadasi and Kaisika Dwadasi An interesting Purana story is narrated in “Sri Varaha Puranam” – a part of “Sri Vishnu Puranam” about the greatness of Kaisika Ekadasi and Kaisikam Dwadasi. Sri VaikundanathanIt is a story about a devotee who used the “Ragam” or “Pann” called “Kaisikam” in praise of Lord “Azhagiya Nambi” of “Thirukurungudi Divya Desam” and thereby made a Brahma Raakshas to shed its Raakshasa Janmam and attain Moksha along with him on the eleventh and twelfth day of Sukla Paksha Kaarthigai Tamil month. A sincere study or hearing of this masterpiece Ekadasi day will fetch Eternal Vaikunda to those souls. It is strongly believed that every one – be he an oarsman, or trader, a chieftain or a Brahmin reached the transcendent state by merely hearing this story in a house or temple on this auspicious day. The story goes like this: A great Divine singer, emerged fin backward Harijan caste by birth, named “NAMPAADUVAAN” in the shrine village Thirukurungudi in Tirunelveli District where Lord AZHAGIYA NAMBI showers his blessings on his devotees. One day, while PAADUVAAN was going to the temple, a Brahma Raakshas waylaid him expressing its desire to eat him away. Paaduvaan was prepared for it but made only request that only Brahma Raakshas could have him as its food, but after returning from the temple finishing his routine prayer. Though the Brahma Raakshas was not prepared to leave him initially, it acceded to his request after he made several promises for his return without fail. Sri VaikundanathanNampaaduvan returned promptly as he promised, to the place where the Brahma Raakshas was anxiously waiting to have him as his prey. The very moment Nampaaduvan reached near Brahma Raakshas, his divine power made it to acquire Gnana Vairaghya Bhakti towards him and it lost the interest in eating him. The Brahma Raakshas told Paaduvaan like this – “I have decided not to eat you but leave you free provided you sacrifice the 'Benefit' of your praise over Lord right now. Paaduvaan rejoiced at this saying and surrendered all the benefits or Punyas, which he obtained by means of his songs in praise of lord. The moment he touched the Brahma Raaksha, it shed from the Raakshasa Janma and attained the Lotus feet of Maha Vishnu. Nampaaduvaan too attained Moksha and joined the 'Periya Veedu'. Even to day in most of the big Vaishnavite temples like Sri Rangam, Sri Villiputhur and Thiru Kurungudi Divya Kshetram, Kaisika Puranam story is read with all sincerity and Devotion. Bhaktas used to fast on Kaisika Ekadasi day, listen to the story in the temple, and finish their fasting with a great feast before sunrise on the next day called Kaisika Dwadasi.
