 Dharma Sastha - SaranathanLord Iyappa avathar took place in the kaliyuga to ward off evil forces and bring in dharma/happiness to the mankind. Padmasuran prayed Lord Parameshwaran and got his wish that he will die only at his hands and not with any other force/divine/human/animals. After that he started killing humans troubling the sadhus and even went to the extent of disturbing Devas. Asuras were creating lot of miseries to humans. Devas under the leadership of Devendira went to Sri Brahmma and prayed for help. He directed them to Sri Maha Vishnu and Lord Shiva. Finally Lord Shiva and Mahavishnu thought the time has come to destroy Padmasura.
They asked devas and asuras to stirrup thiruparkkadal using Mantra hills and Vasugi snake to get Amrith so that their problems will get solved. When they started the work lot of things and wonders came out from Parkkadal. Finally amrith came and both asuras and devas started fighting for their share. Mahavishnu took took Mohini avathar and cleverly deceived the asuras gave the amrith to devas. This angered Padmasura. He started towards Devalogam. Vishnu in mohini avathar went towards Padmasura and started dancing and invited him to dance with her. He danced with Mohini. Mohini took her hand and placed it in her head. Padmasuran also followed this and put the hand on his head. He was burnt into ashes as per Lord Shiva's boon to him Lord Shiva seeing Mahavaishnu in Mohini posture went towards her with love. This was the flash point of 2 great divine power joining. Lord Dharmasastha avathar was the culmination of this divine act.

Both Lords saw the birth of Dharmasastha born with bell around his neck and called him Manikanda. They put him in the banks of river Pamba. Rajasekara Pandian who was the ruler of Chera dynasty went for jungle jumbory. He went for hunting a deer and reached Pamba river. H e heard the crying of a baby and reached the spot where manikandan was lying. He was astonished and pleased to see a beautiful child. H e was looking around to see the parents. But no one was visible. Unable to move his head from the child he wanted to take the child with him as he had no issues. He wanted to raise the child with him. At that time a Rishi came and told him that the Lord has sent the child to this place for him only and asked him to take the child to his palace. He took the child and handed over to his queen.

Thus Lord Manikandan(Iyappa) came to Pandala palace and taken care of by the king. After that queen gave birth to male child named Rajarajan. Both children were well taken care of by parents. As years passed by the king sent Iyappa to gurukulam for educating him to become the next king of Cheras. During gurukulam Iyappa respected his guru and with his divine power made guru's son to speak. After gurukulam Rajasekaran king wanted to hand over the throne to Iyappa. He called his ministers and diwans and informed them about his decision. While everybody liked it cheif minister who is closed to queen didn't' approve of Iyappan becoming the king instead he wanted queen's son Rajarajan to become the king. He approached the queen and conveyed the kings news of Iyappans' coronation. Queen was very much happy and presented him with gifts. But the minister refused it and persuaded her to ignore Iyappa. He convinced her that her son Rajarajan only should become King. That will happen only when Iyappa is eliminated. She asked her to act as if she is suffering from severe stomach pain. When the news came about queen's illness all the kingdoms' doctors tested the queen and could not ascertain the cause of illness. With predetermined idea the chief minister informed the king that this illness will be cured only by the tiger milk. Raja asked his soldiers to try this. But the minister said only Iyappan can bring the milk to save the queen. With great hesitation king sent Iyappa to the jungle to get the tiger milk. He gave iyappa a piece of bag which contained pooja items in the front and food items in the back portion. That is called Irumudi which everybody is carrying now to worship Lord Iyappa in Sabari mala.

Iyappa started his path to the jungle via Erumeli where he encountered the thief Vavar and made him his friend. He left for river Azhutha where Mahishi, the demon queen of asuras started fighting with him. He killed her , plugged her head and thrown the body in Azhutha hills. He put stones over that so that she will never become alive. The demon queen became beatiful woman and prayed lord Iyappa to marry her. Iyappa told her that he is strict Brahmachary (bachelor) in this avathar. He can marry her if no new devotee visits sabarimala to worship him(which never happens). Who ever comes to worhsip him will also offer her prayers to her. she will be called Malayapurathu amman. The amman sannadhi is one of the main temple in sabarimala. Shiva and parvathi witnessed this scene with their wagon Nandhi. That area is called now Kalaketti.

Devendira was pleased and offered to help Lord Iyappa. He became a Tiger and all devas also become tigers and requested Iyappa to take them to Chera Palace and help her mother recover. By seeing the entire tigers flooding the palace the chief minister and the queen realized the power of Iyappa and begged him to forgive them. Lord Iyappa informed them about his avathar and said he will be leaving them. Raja cried and asked Iyappa when he can see him again. Lord Iyappa said he will be in Sabari mala in this kaliyuga and asked him to build a temple for him sothat devotees can worship him there. He asked Rajasekara raja to build a temple where the arrow from kings bow fell. That area is called now Saramkuthi. Raja requested the help Divine sculptor Viswakarma to build the temple. He built the nice temple with 18 holy steps in the front. he also construct Kannimoola Ganapathy sannadi,Dharma Sastha - SaranathanNagaraja sannadhi, Maligapurathu Amman sannadhi. Lord Parasurama and Maharishi Agasthiar performed the pooja and appointed thanthris for daily pooja. Thus the sabarimala temple with Holy 18 steps being worshipped by lot of devotees around the world.

Raja asked Iyappa when he can see him again. For that Lord Iyappa told that during maharasankranthi day he will appear as Jyothi in the sky every year. That we are seeing even now every year in January.

For dharshan of Lord Iyappa there are 2 routes. One via pamba 7 kms route by walk and the other by Erumeli 48 kms stretch. Erumeli routes consists of Erumeli, Perurthode,Kalaketti, Azhutha River, Azhutha Hills, Kallidum Kundru, injipara Kotta, Ilyanthavalam, Karivalanthode, Karimala, Siriynavattam, perianavattam, PambaDharma Sastha - Saranathan thiruveni, Ganapathy sannidhanam, Neelimala, Appachimedu, ippachi Kuzhi, Sabarippedam, Saranguthi, Sannidhanam.

From Vandiperiya estate also we can reach sabarimala by walk which is around 18Km. From Kumizhi to Vandiperiar estate it is around 12 Km. There are lot of buses run by Kerala state transport from Kottayam, Chenganur, Kumizhi
and other parts of the state.Iyappa
